Biography

Born in Tanara, Banten, he settled in Mecca and wrote extensively in Arabic on tafsir, fiqh, tawhid and tasawwuf; many of his commentaries remain standard pesantren texts. He was known as Sayyid ‘Ulama’ al-Hijaz. Birth year is given as 1813 or 1815; he died in Mecca in 1897.
