Established in its modern form in 1926 by three brothers, KH Ahmad Sahal, KH Zainuddin Fannani and KH Imam Zarkasyi, reviving an older pesantren at Gontor. It pioneered the ‘pondok modern’ model combining classical Islamic sciences with a structured curriculum and bilingual Arabic-English instruction, and now has many branch campuses.
