Penyengat was a seat of the Bugis viceroys (Yang Dipertuan Muda) of Riau-Lingga. It holds the Masjid Raya Sultan Riau and the tomb of Raja Ali Haji, author of the Gurindam Dua Belas and a key figure in standardising Malay.
