Sultan Mahmud Shah II, the last ruler of the Melaka–Johor royal line, was assassinated in 1699 while being carried in state, hence the epithet ‘Mangkat Dijulang’. His death ended the dynasty’s direct line. The tomb lies at Kampung Makam near Kota Tinggi.
