Born in Bogor in 1931, he has written on Malay Islamic history, metaphysics and the ‘Islamisation of knowledge’, including a study of Hamzah Fansuri, and founded the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC) in Kuala Lumpur.
