Born in Koto Tuo, Agam, he settled in Mecca, where he taught many students from the Malay world, including future reformists and traditionalists. He wrote against aspects of Minangkabau matrilineal inheritance and the Naqshbandiyyah. Commonly dated 1860–1916.
